O'Neil, who was in her high-school year during the auditions, volunteered in the 3rd season of Canadian Idol in the beginning of 2005. She advanced into the top 100 rounds because the judges were thrilled with her performances. O'Neil received high praise from the jury. However, she was a major loser in both the top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. They were stunned by the decision and proclaimed to the public the fact that Melissa was the most talented contestant.
